The aim of the study is to assess the impact on the agricultural labour force of the changes which have occurred in the social and economic environment with the rapid rate of economic growth, improvements in the standard of living and the increase in alternative job opportunities. A major concern of the government authorities and the sugar industry which prompted this study is the future availability of agricultural labour in the face of the rapid decline over the last two decades of the agricultural labour force and especially the sugar industry field labour. We have also inquired into workers attitudes and reactions regarding a number of problems which have been at the centre of recent public debate on the working conditions of field labour in the sugar industry. The work provides useful insights into the problems of agricultural workers and their perceptions and aspirations, which could help the authorities in formulating an effective policy with a view to securing higher productivity and better results from this important segment of the island's labour force.
